Hello. I've had a forumup site for over 2 years, and just recently, I have found at on both my sites

have some problems. For some reason guests are not able to post in ANY rooms what so ever. I have gone to the administration area and tried and tried again to give guests the permission to post, view, read, etc.

However, although what I'm reading states that they should be able to do all these things they're still not able to.

Please contact me at [edited by FoxLeonard]

or send me a PM at either of my websites.

Thanks!

Hi, Sc(+)p3,

Guest posting is not allowed on forums (with ads), and we strongly advice against it, even if you remove the ads, as it allows spambots to post as well.

You can read more about it here:

Now, about this:

It's never a good thing to post your email in public.

We don't answer support questions by email (except in very special, personal, cases).

No Staff members here are, to the best of my knowledge, members of any of your forums, and it is not our policy to register just to be able to send a PM in reply to a question.

Nor is it our policy to reply in PMs on this forum.

We only reply to support questions in the support forums.

I will however send you a PM, here, telling you that I have replied, in the hope that you'll get a "new PM mail", just in case you actually believe that the above request should work.

I definitely appreciate the concern about my email address, but I re-assure you it's only temporary. I'm being as safe as I considered I would need to be.

The problem is, guests USED to be able to post in my forums, and people were always spamming me and posting advertisements ( usually porn) in our forums.

Although it did bother me at the time, it is important that guests are able to post in a selected few chat rooms on my websites.

My websites belong to clans, and as such we require that people fill out forms, etc. before being a member of the clan. We read the forms, as them a few questions and then tell them whether they can register or not. If people register without our permission we simply delete the account.

Same with the advertisement problems. We simply delete them when ever we seem them.

So if you could please help me with this problem, it is urgent, and I only ask that you allow a few of my forums accessible to all guests.

Another random question is it possible so that you can make the activation code for the registrations come to you instead of the user so YOU can activate the account with your permission?

Thanks again,
Sc(+)p3

There is only one way to enable Guest posting, and that is for you to remove the ads from your forums.

You will find up to date information about it here:

Only registered users can see links on this forum!
Register or Login on forum!

To make a payment, you go to:

Admin Panel >> General Admin >> ForumUp

Scroll down to Special Features

Show without ads

...and click the PayPal logo.

Right below you can set the ad removal to be for registered users only. Thereby making the "clicks" last longer.

At the bottom of the same page you have the option to enable/disable the Donate Paypal button, at the bottom of the forum. (It is activated on your forums as it is).

Yes, go to

Admin Panel >> General Admin >> Configuration

Scroll down to:

Enable account activation None ¤User Admin

Set it to Admin, like this:

Enable account activation None User ¤Admin

And click Submit at the bottom.

I have to pay to remove adds? And if I remove adds... guest can post. That's all pretty lame. But ok... I guess.

Sc(+)p3, there is actually another -- free -- solution to your problem.

You can keep the automatic registration (activation email) and have one forum open for people who register, and then have the access (permissions) to the other forums restricted to a Usergroup, where you -- and the Usergroup Moderator -- add the members, once they have passed the test.

When those who didn't pass have got the message, you can prune their accounts, once in a while, just like you prune spambots and such.

I fully understand that this is not what you want to have, but this is an efficient and free of charge option, to paying for Ads Removal.

Oops, we were posting at the same time here...

Sc(+)p3 wrote:

No, it's not "pretty lame". There is a clear connection between people who take care of their forums, and people who pay for Ads Removal. Which means that someone paying for Ads Removal is likely to keep the spam at bay, if they allow guest posting.

All this, while there is no way to set these kind of permissions different for individual forums, that all share the same software on the same server.

I know it is inconvenient, but please blame the spammer brigade, and not ForumUp.

What do you mean? The default setting for ForumUp forums is for account activation to be on "user". You can't make it work on "none", if that is what you were trying to do.

Guests (non logged in people) cannot post unless you pay to remove ads.

So what is it you are having a problem with?

Well, I tried doing that. Don't get me wrong, but I'm 14 years old, and not good with computers.

Forumup is easy, fast, and free. So I just do this. But now and again I'll come across something I can't fix, and I tried doing all three, (None, User, Admin)
And I assumed if you put the account activation on none people could just make an account and log in. I guess I was wrong. It was on User before that, and people never received their key codes to activate their account in their email.

Sc(+)p3, let's see if we can clear this up. You say that you have tried all three options on the account activation, and you cannot change it.

You only have two working options: User and Admin. None is disabled, because of the spambots.

You change it by clicking the "empty hole" next to the word, so the "green dot" moves from where it is, to the option you want to use.

So, if you want to set it to Admin, then it should look like this:

Enable account activation: None User ¤Admin

If you got that right:

Did you remember to go down to the bottom of the Configuration page, and click Submit...

...and then wait for the "answer"; a new page saying "forum configuration updated successfully"?

Please make another try, with all the right steps, before we start to investigate if something is wrong.

Quote:
It was on User before that, and people never received their key codes to activate their account in their email.

This is usually because the activation emails get caught in spam filters, and don't reach the new member's inboxes. On AOL it does not even go to the spam. So AOL doesn't work at all.

Sometimes it happens that the email handling program on the forums doesn't work properly.

If you decide to keep User activation, then you can lessen these problems like this:

Tell people to put your email adress -- the one that sends emails from the forum -- in their email contacts, already when they register. And tell them to contact you if they don't recieve their activation emails, within 24 hours. You can write it in a forum description box at the top of the forums.

I'm not that dumb. I know that you have to fill in the empty hole next to the options, and I always remember to click submit. Thanks for the help...

I'm not that dumb either, Sc(+)p3, and it's nevertheless my most frequent mistake to forget to click Submit, especially when I do the same things over and over again.

And when you said that you are not all that good with computers, I thought it would be best to include as many details as possible.

Now, if it refuses to change to Admin Activation (and stays in User mode), even if you do everything correct. Then I start to wonder if the Admin Activation is disabled (again) on .org for some strange reason.

I will make an inquiry about this, and get back to you.

Don't give up just yet, okay Wink

You can't change the url of your forum. Your forum database is on the .org domain. So it the url for your forum will always end in .org.

There is not a difference between .org and .com.

If you want a forum on .com, you have to create a new forum. You cannot move your forum from .org to .com.

Your forum should work fine with user activation set to "admin". That means that YOU get the email activation notice for each person that registers.
