Maybe the answer is elsewhere, but I haven't found it yet. Could I have an answer to the following question please.

Who is logged into viewing my "PRIVATE AREAS" in my forums? meaning when you check to see who is viewing what and you see "GUEST" and he/she is located viewing in your private section.

I don't care if its a member from of Adim/Owner from "FORUMUP", I just want to make sure its not an outside hacker or something else.

Thank you in advance for any help.

If you have a private section I suppose guests are not allowed to see it (if done properly), so probably what you are seeing is a search bot. You can track his ip to check it out.

How do I track the IP address?
When you see their name in the admin panel an series of numbers is next to it. That is their IP address. You can click on it to find more info about that IP address.

What I usually do is copy the IP and paste it in the google search bar. That gives me the information I need (most of the time).

Anyway - about "reading" your private sections, when you see a guest "viewing" that room - all they get to see is a login screen.

exactly.. most of the chances is that you have a search bot as a guest.. at least for me it has been so.

you could check for your self (i suppose) if you give a link to a private forum to a friend and ask him to visit it you will most propably see his ip as guest viewing your private forum whearas your friend will be stuck on the login screen.. Wink

You need to remember that sometimes a guest can be a member who just logged off.
The board has a memory, for where folk were last.
I made that mistake once, and banned an ip.
One very angry member later, I learned my lesson. Laughing

Really? I find that very hard to believe, Xcotty. Rolling Eyes

IPs......... Q. up top. Log into administration and click the IP shown for the guest, then tell Network Tools to do an Express Search.

There should be sufficient information there to determine friend or foe.

The latest spy bots I'm seeing are from Venezuela and China. Shocked

Oh, darn sigs........

Well, anyway, if a person clicks on the link to a private section, but does not have permission to read in that section, they only get the login screen. But, in your admin panel, it will show that person is in that private section. But they really aren't. Well, they are at the "entrance" but blocked by a "locked door".

No need or sense to go banning IP addresses for that.

The problem, Margaret, at least from my perspective, is when these spy bots troupe through a Board (let's assume it is Public), are they causing damage?

I have to ask because a LARGE number of members' computers (including mine, once) are picking up Trojans, Worms, and Viruses, as well as some really nasty malware. I know of two people who are having to reformat their computers.

This is seriously bad news and, as far as I can gather, one of the few common denominators is both use ForumUp. I cannot say how many in total are having all sorts of other problems but have not yet reached the reformat stage. Sad

Is it possible, I wonder, that ForumUp - UK and I guess DK - is once again itself infected? If so, all the other little problems pale into insignificance. Confused

NO. The forums are not infected. People pick up malware from all over the internet, and even from emails they were sent. Everyone needs to clean out their computers using various "malware" cleaners. Virus protection programs alone don't get all types of malware. See our Guide about cleaning out malware at

People don't need to reformat over malware such as worms, trojans, dialers, and the like. Those can be cleaned off a computer.

I urge everyone to download Lavasoft's free Ad-Aware Personal Edition, as well as Spybot-Search and Destroy. Run them every week or so.

Search Bots do not cause any damage. They cannot make any viruses or malware on a forum. They are from the various search engines and all they do is look for key words to then use to index the forum. That is so if people do a search, your Forum might come up in the list of hits. But NO ONE can see in a private section if they are not logged in and have permission to see in that section.

Anyone who does not have permission to see in a private section will only get the login page instead, or a message saying "You do not have permission to see in this section".
