Hurricane Ike is heading for Houston, Texas, USA, where the servers for all of ForumUp are located. The servers are in a facility owned by a company named The Planet.

The Planet has taken great precautions to keep the servers safe and running. In fact, they will even have staff remain in the building during the hurricane, with food and water provisions for employees to remain in place for several days, so they can tend to the servers!

Likely, power will be out in the area hit by the hurricane, but The Planet has it's own generators, and reports that they have enough fuel to power their facilities for up to a week without any required backup. But, they have brought in an additional 10,000 gallons as backup if needed.

The Houston data centers are located in North Houston, at least 60 miles from the coast of Galveston Bay, so flooding is not likely to be a service-affecting issue.

Buildings in the Houston area must meet building codes to withstand winds of at least 120 miles per hour. At the time of this post, the hurricane has hit Galveston, Texas with 110 mph winds. The winds in Houston are at approximately 85-100 mph.

The link below shows the satellite map of this giant storm. Hurricane Ike's eye diameter is a 60 miles across!:

As far as our forums are concerned, it is not expected that there will be any problems. However, we cannot guarantee that the hurricane won't get worse and present some problems.

Our best wishes and great thanks go out to the employees of The Planet for riding out the hurricane to care for our servers.

Our forum was unavailable for a short moment, as was the Dutch support forum.
All is back now, so it was probably a "hiccup" Wink I heard on CNN that over 3 million people are without power.
Good luck to all of them, it won't be easy to deal with it along with the extensive damage, even in down town Houston.

Well, it was actually the company named "The Planet", where ForumUp's servers are located, who did the job of keeping everything running. But good of Raulken to have chosen the company The Planet to use for ForumUp. The Planet has that 10,000 gallons of fuel to use for their generators, in addition to what is already in the generators, so that should last until power in the area gets restored.

I hope you manage to get in touch with your family soon. Maybe they went to a hotel that has a generator for power, if they don't have any power in their house.
