Not sure if i'm in the right spot for this but it does say Graphics links.
I've done a search but not really found the answer to my question so:

I've just set up a forum for my local camera club, and as it is a camera
club its likely to run a little image heavy. I'll be limiting the image sizes
to 800 pixels along its longest length and under say 150kb. They will
be linked to an off-site host, similar to the image below.

What i want to know is will showing images in this way have an effect
on the bandwidth of the forum ?. Are we likely to try to log in one day
and find a message like: 'You have exceeded your sites bandwidth for
today/week/month' ?

I just dont want to go to the trouble of getting the forum up and
running only to find we cant use it as we would like to...

Cheers

Rob

If you are referring to the width of the screen, yes it will effect but no message will show up.

If you are using some third-party image hosts, surely you can adjust the size on the host.

No, i am refering to many other forums that limit the size and number of images shown
because (and i quote the Admins of those sites) 'They take up too much bandwidth'

So does that have to do with the width an image is on the screen ?

Bandwith is not something admins of forums should worry about. Our webmaster, Raulken, deals with it. As far as I know, there hasn't been a problem with forums with many images in the threads. In case your forum starts creating too much trouble for the webmaster, I guess you will be asked to attempt limiting the bandwith, but I strongly doubt this will happen.

Thank you, it's just something i've heard time and time again on quite a few forums.

I cant envisage a problem as there are only 50 members in the club and i'll
be limiting the image size to what i've mentioned above anyway. That seems a
reasonable size for web use..

Thanks again

Rob

I use ImageShack. It has a special setting of 640X480 for forums and message boards. They do not bloat the page.

Example:

A patch of blue in the middle above the wires and ths angry leaden clouds still on the horizon.

I would agree with Alvas. You as a admin of a forum shouldn't have to worry about that.

No. You will not find a message like that one day. There is not a set amount of bandwidth allowed per forum.

However, if there are bunches of spam or nonsense posts, that essential are a waste, then a forum will be sent a personal warning.

None of the images are stored on ForumUp's servers, so linked to images don't take up ForumUp's bandwidth. Even though coding can be used to make the image seem to be on the forum within a post, the image really isn't in the post, as in being in the data base. It is really on the server of whatever image host was used to store the image.

Thanks, thats all i needed to know.

I'm new to this side of things and like i said it's something that
i've heard time and time again. I did always wonder how it could
affect a forums bandwidth if images were linked on an off-site host.

Cheers

Rob
