How to Make Someone a Moderator

There are two ways to make a person a moderator.

Method 1. Individually assigning people as moderators

1) Go to the Admin Panel>User Admin> Management.

2) Type in the name of the person you want to give moderator abilites to in the blank field on the User Administration page. Then click "Look up User".

3) That user's profile page is now seen. Go to the bottom and locate the "Rank Title" area.

4) Click on the arrow next to the rank currently showing, which would normally be "no special rank assigned". When the other rank choices are now in view after the arrow was clicked on, select the Moderator rank. (You will have had to have created that rank previously.) Then click on the "Submit" button. The person does not yet have any moderator rights, only a label.

5) Next, in the Admin Panel, go to User Admin>Permissions.

6) In the User Permissions area that shows up, type in that person's name in the blank field, and click on "Look up user".

7) On the User Control Permissions page that shows up, next to each forum area that you want that person to have moderator abilities for, click on the arrow next to the words "Not Moderater." Select from that drop down box, "Is Moderator". The click on the "Submit" button at the bottom of the page.

The person's name will show on the index page under each forum section for which you made the person a moderator.

Method 2, Making a Moderator by Adding a Person to a Moderator Group.

In this group method, only do steps 1-4 from above, reposted below.

1) Go to the Admin Panel>User Admin> Management.

2) Type in the name of the person you want to give moderator abilites to in the blank field on the User Administration page. Then click "Look up User".

3) That user's profile page is now seen. Go to the bottom and locate the "Rank Title" area.

4) Click on the arrow next to the rank currently showing, which would normally be "no special rank assigned". When the other rank choices are now in view after the arrow was clicked on, select the Moderator rank. Then click on the "Submit" button. The person does not yet have any moderator rights, only a label.

5) Next, make a Moderator group. Go to Admin Panel>Group Admin>Management. On the page that comes up, click on the button that says, "Create New Group".

6) Fill in a name for the group, such as perhaps, "Forum Moderators", or "Staff". Fill in a description of what that group is for, only if you want to. You don't have to put anything in that description section.

7) Name yourself or another Admin as the moderator of the "Moderator" group.

8) Chose to make the group "closed" or "hidden". If you were to select "open", then anyone would be able to make themselves a moderator, with moderator powers. You don't want that!

"Closed" means that no one can add themselves, but the members of that group will be able to be seen by all on the Index page of your forum if people click on the "Usergroups" button at the top of the index page. This is the best option in general for a Moderator group, as you would normally want the members of your forum to know who the moderators are.

"Hidden" means that no one but the Admin will be able to see the list of the members of that group if clicking on the "Usergroups" button at the top of the Index page.

9) Press "submit". No one is in that group yet, and so far, that group does not have moderator powers anywhere.

10) Next, go to Admin Panel>Group Admin>Permissions. On the page that shows up, select the forum sections you want the moderator group to moderate. At the end of each forum section name, click on the arrow on the box that says, "Not Moderator", and select, "Is Moderator".

11) After that, go to the index page of your forum. At the top menu section, click on "Usergroups". Select the new moderators group you just made.

12) At the bottom of that page, where it says, "Add a member", type in the user name of a person you want to be a moderator. Click on "Submit". Keep adding names until you have all the people you want to be moderators. You can add other people at any time in the future, and can remove anyone at any time.

All the people you added to that group are now Moderators of the sections you gave that Moderator group permission to moderate!

You do NOT go to each person's permission profile separately to also give moderator abilities, as was done in Method one. That is not needed, since by adding the people to the moderator group, they already have moderator permissions.

Instead of individual names of people who are moderators being listed under each forum sections, the name of your moderator group will show up.

Or make a hidden group. That way, the member(s) can still moderate that forum, but it's not listed. (Thanks to Harry Potter for this update.)
