Is there away that i can control who can sign up to my forum ie away that i can aprove who joins my forum. the reason i ask is my forum is on my family tree and i'd like only ppl who are direct links to my tree to have access to it and post to it becouse of the type of info it will have on (Dob,dod etc)

You can set the activation to admin, so that you will need to approve the account of everyone registered in your forum. For more information see this thread

You can also make a private section, where you can place the information that should be hidden and give permissions only to the people that should view it. You can see the guide about making private forums:
