Hopefully this is in the right section.

In Aibakaland (http://aibakaland.forumup.org/) we activate accounts manually 'cause there have been a lot of spammers before.

When members register, they receive an email stating that the account is inactive and that the member will receive an email from the admin when it's activated. However that e-mail is never sent.

I first though those e-mails might be in trash or so, so I tested it using few different e-mails. But the result is that there really is no e-mail sent when account is activated.

Is there any way to fix this?

Have you tried yahoo? Some e-mail providers do not receive those e-mails.

I'll try to register.

Never mind! I guess it was a little slow getting to my inbox.

I have got the e-mail as following.

Welcome to Forums

Please keep this email for your records. Your account information is as
follows:

----------------------------
Username: piratescoobs
Password: *
----------------------------

Your account is currently inactive, the administrator of the board will
need to activate it before you can log in. You will receive another
email when this has occured.

Please do not forget your password as it has been encrypted in our
database and we cannot retrieve it for you. However, should you forget your
password you can request a new one which will be activated in the same
way as this account.

Thank you for registering.

I activated the account now.

Also, for the test accounts I have used several different e-mails: gmail, hotmail, sailormoon, kuririnmail, mymelody, my school's address.. And none of them received the e-mail.

I believe the admin has to personally send an email after they manually activate someone. Since it was not an automatic activation, I don't see how the automatic system would know to send an email telling someone they were manually activated.

As for reducing the number of spam registrations, ban the emails and add to the name "disallow" list as per the post of mine in the below listed thread from the "Other Forum Questions" section:

Haru, and everybody else, there is a way for the Admin to activate an account in such a way that a notification email is sent.

However, the automated way contains a security flaw, which is why we recommend the actually manual activation of accounts, via the profile, as this gives an opportunity to make sure that it is a "legit" user, and not a spam bot.

Here is what happens, if you have the Configuration set to Admin activation:

The new user registers, and recieves the following email:

Code:
Welcome to foxtest Forums Please keep this email for your records. Your account information is as follows:

----------------------------
Username: xxxxxxxxxxx
Password: xxxxxxxxxxx
----------------------------
Your account is currently inactive, the administrator of the board will need to activate it before you can log in. You will receive another email when this has occured. Please do not forget your password as it has been encrypted in our database and we cannot retrieve it for you. However, should you forget your password you can request a new one which will be activated in the same way as this account. Thank you for registering. -- Thanks, The Management

At the same time the Admin of the forum recieves this email (the link is slightly altered here):

Code:
Hello,

The account owned by "xxxxxxxxxx" has been deactivated or newly
created, you should check the details of this user (if required) and activate it using the following link:

http://foxtest.forumup.co.uk/profile.php?xforum=foxtest&mode=xxxxxxx&x=6&act_key=1c5b481a924e4

--
Thanks, The Management

The email does indeed say:

you should check the details of this user (if required)

But the link in the email does not allow for that, if you happen to use it, as it is an instant activation link.

Click the link and you will be taken to the Log In page.

Log in, and you will get a page with this message "in reply":

Information

The account has now been activated

...after which you are logged in and redirected to the Index page.

At the same time as you click the activation link, this email is automatically sent to the new member:

Code:
Hello xxxxxxxxxxx, Your account on "foxtest" has now been activated, you may login using the username and password you received in a previous email. -- Thanks, The Management

Now, you can indeed use the activation links in the emails, but not until you have checked the profile, and made sure that it is "legit".

And note that you cannot use the link in the notification email to do that. You have to log in the usual way first, to check the profile.

I forgot to add that Hotmail, and some other email providers, do not accept emails from the forumup.org domain.

For more information about that particular problem, please see this topic:

FoxLeonard, that's the way we do activate the accounts - via e-mail after first checking the users are ok.

gg'ssimon, we have done that too. There is a pretty huge list of certain e-mails, domains and words in ban list. But I still wanna keep on activating accounts manually.

And these users do recieve the first "you have to wait" email, but not the second, "your account is activated" one?!

Strangely enough, this seems to rule out the rejection problem (see my post above), while it also rules out a problem with the .org Emailer; if it sends the first email, it should send the second one. If an email account accepts the first email, it should accept the second one...

It makes little or no sense... Rolling Eyes

I'm afraid that I'll have to experiment a little, and get back to you, Haru.

Haru, I believe that I have found the problem (unless you say otherwise).

I tested on my .org testforum now, first the exact same way as I described above, and using a safe yahoo email account for the registration. Both the first "Welcome, you have to wait" and the second "your account has been activated" arrived instantly.

Then I re-registered the account, and recieved a second "welcome, you have to wait", without delay.

In my Admin email I found the notification with the activation link, and did what would be natural when you want to check the profile, before activating the account.

I logged on to the forum, and into the Admin Panel, checked the profile, and then I went to my email and clicked the activation link.

No second "your account has been activated" email has arrived to the testmember's account.

Conclusion: The forum emailer is not activated unless you actually log on, after having clicked the activation link (the member account is activated, though).

Exclamation Which means that you have to be logged out from the forum, before you click the activation link, and actually log on for the second email to be sent.

Summary, if you want an auto email sent to users that registered, when you have your forum set for admin to activate users:

First you look in your email and see what username is in the email.

Then, DO NOT click on that link yet.

Go to your forum, log in and check out that user's details to decide if you want to have them activated. Do NOT manually activate them!

Log out of your forum.

Go back to your email and then if you want that member, at this time click on the link, which brings you to your forum. Log in again.

NOW, the member is activated and the auto email gets sent.

[If you manually activate a user by clicking the box in their profile, no automatic message gets sent.]

*****************************

I think it would be a lot easier to just go check the details, manually activate the user by the check box, and then just send them an email personally.
